After necessary preparations, it is time to take a domestic flight from Katmandu to Tenzing Hillary Airport at Lukla – the gateway to the Everest region. Situated at an extreme altitude of 2,860 meters and perched on the top of a steep hill, Tenzin Hilary is considered as one of the world’s most precarious airports. And this is thrilling in its own light! Enjoy the panoramic aerial view of snow peaks east of Kathmandu during your 35-minute flight. After landing, we will take a gentle walk along the mountainside and stay overnight in Phakding village.
After a good breakfast at Phakding, we will head upstream Dudh Koshi River and set out for the mountain junction town of Namche. Along the way, there is an entrance to Sagarmatha National Park which was set up to protect the fragile mountainous environment. Get ready to experience the first view of Mt Everest and many other peaks as we take a steep hike to Namche Bazar.
Namche is located between two ridges and is the largest town in the Khumbu region. With the abundance availability of tea houses, lodges and souvenir shops, Namche is an ideal place to rest and acclimatize to the new altitude.
Today we will head towards Dole from Namche crossing the village of Khumjung. From Namche, the route climbs to Sangboche for 2 to 3 hours to reach Khumjung and the trail for Dole descend further from Khumjung, then climbs up to the Mong la. The path for Dole heads to left into the forest and climbs to some isolated houses from here. The views are stupendous on the trail.
Today we are trekking relatively short distance but it is necessary to keep in mind that we are not supposed to walk too fast or climb too high because of high altitude. Comfort yourself with an easy walk.
The sheer-sided of Tobuche and Cho Latse seem to rise to the sky. Climbing continuously, we get to the village of Machhermo, which provides stunning views of the hill from behind.
Today we are heading to the main destination of our trek. After breakfast, we start climbing through Pangar and Na. Climbing over the moraines there is often the bridging point. The trail passes through the lake of Tobuche Tso. A tremendous ark of peaks is revealed, with Cho Yu and Gangchung Kang making the biggest impression on the way.
It is our side trip around the Gokyo. The view of the north face of Everest is different here with a spectacular view of Cho you to the north.
We have to climb a long zigzags trail. It is recommended to climb slowly. After climbing for a few hours, we will get to the Gokyo Ri, which is slightly lower than Kala Patthar is. From the top of Gokyo Ri, Gangchung Kang, Tobuche, Cholatse, and Cho la pass can be seen. We descend back to Gokyo after spending enough time at Gokyo Ri.
Today onwards, we will descend back, to end our trek to Gokyo. It is easier to descend which means we can directly reach Dole from Gokyo, passing Machhermo, in a short period. However, be careful! The trail is slippery to descend downwards. The enchanting views around us will make us feel less tired. Descending down with around 6 to 7 hours, we will get to Dole.
It is quite a long trek to reach Namche from Dole crossing the village of Sanasa and Khumjung but it is worth walking with the fresh air blown through Everest. Walking down and taking rest, we will reach the village of Namche, the busy village of Khumbu region.
It is our last day trek in the Khumbu region. Enjoy your day. Ideally, the trek from Namche to Lukla is of two days taking rest at Phakding. However, most of the trekkers take direct a long day trek to Lukla from Namche. Enjoy your night viewing the charming night view of one of the dangerous airports in the world.
It’s time to bid farewell to Everest, the roof of the world. You will take a scenic early morning flight to Kathmandu. After touchdown, we will check in a comfortable hotel in the capital for much-needed rest from this tiring but extremely memorable trek.
Our Everest Base Camp trek has come to an end and now its departure day. You can visit nearby places, indulge yourself in last hour shopping and prepare for departure.
